“What should I name my blog?” “I need blog title ideas!” These are all-too-common complaints that a lot of new bloggers have. And for good reason; a blog title isn’t something you can change too easily after you’ve started your blog. It’s definitely one aspect of your blog that you need to put a LOT of thought into.

Here are some tips and pointers on how to name your blog:

Try to come up with a name that conveys your blog’s message. Cleverness should not take precedent over clarity. For example, if your name is Pete and you blog about rock climbing, don’t name your blog something like “Pete’s Ponderings.” A better option would be “Pete’s Climbing Blog” or “Climbing With Pete.”

But this raises another interesting question: Should your name even be in the blog title at all? I don’t think so. There’s nothing inherently wrong with “Climbing With Pete,” but it IS a bit limiting. What if you eventually decide that you want to get other people to write for your blog? It would be better if you named your blog something like “Climbing Rules” or “Climber Nation” or something like that. Your name in the blog title is OK only if your blog is strictly going to be a personal blog.

And I guess that’s one of the big, main ideas behind naming your blog: Do NOT limit yourself! I had a blog once that had the word “daily” in its title and domain name. But eventually I grew tired of updating it daily. Ideally, I would have just gone down to posting once a week, but I couldn’t do that because the domain name limited me.

Here’s one final thing to consider: Try to get the exact match .com domain name of whatever you decide to call your blog. In fact, I personally wouldn’t name any blog something that I couldn’t get the .com version of. I think it’s that important.

Well, I hope that helped! If you have any questions or need help with blog title ideas, feel free to shoot me an email.
