Help Me Decide on a Name for My New eBook

January 20, 2012

I’ll be releasing a cheap (probably 99 cents to start out) Kindle ebook on Amazon next week and I need your help with choosing a title for it. If you could take literally just a few seconds to select an option on survey below, I’d really appreciate it.

The ebook will be based on my old 101 Ways You’re Killing Your Blog ebook, but will be updated with new tips and about 50% more material. The main title of the new ebook will be 101 Blogging Tips, but I’m still undecided about the subtitle. That’s what I want your help with.

Please select an option from the survey below or enter in your own suggestion. Thanks! [Click here if you can't see the survey]

Hey Tristan,

Are you going to use the iBook Author app that was released today by Apple to publish to the iBookstore?

Just curious what you think of the app and the potential it brings for authors now.

Nope, I won’t be using it. The iBook Author app is only good for Apple’s iBookstore. My target is Amazon’s Kindle Store for a few different reasons: 1) I have Kindles and love the Kindle format, 2) you don’t need an ISBN for self publishing an ebook in the Kindle store (as opposed to the iBookstore, which requires you to have an ISBN and some other stuff), 3) I want to see how Amazon’s new KDP Select (which I’ve written about here >> http://www.amazopia.com/amazon-kdp-select-kindle-owners-lending-library/ ) program works, and 4) I know that number of Kindle ebooks sold is generally far more than iBooks sold. Oh, and 5) I want to see if I can get to the front page of Google for “blogging tips” with this ebook, since Amazon pages consistently rank on the front page. The same can’t be said for the iBookstore. Should be interesting little SEO experiment, right?

I have downloaded the app, though, and will play around with it when I get a chance. It looks great for people wanting to publish graphics-heavy ebooks for the iPad. If I do ever decide to publish this particular ebook in the iBookstore, I’d probably just convert it from the .mobi to .epub format using one of the free converters. I wouldn’t need to use iBook Author because I don’t need to do any graphics formatting.

One thing that I don’t like about iBook Author is that it only runs on Macs. This isn’t a problem for me because my main computer is a Mac, but I think it limits the appeal to other independent publishers.

Just out of curiosity then, you plan on ranking the Amazon page for ‘blogging tips’? Are you planning on actively SEO’ing the Amazon page? Also, I think I have a little bit of a case study regarding SEO that I’m about done with if you think you might be interested in publishing on your site. It’s a 30+ day study in the methods I used to rank a particular subpage for a client. Let me know!

I don’t really *plan* to rank the Amazon page for “blogging tips.” I want to see how far it gets in the SERPs organically. I’m not going to actively do any linkbuilding to the Amazon page or anything.

And yeah, I’d love to post your SEO case study. Sounds rad to the max.

Thanks! Yeah, asking people about it was definitely a good idea. I got some great feedback.

Also, I voted for the how to not kill your blog subtitle. Ran a few keywords and I think there is more potential in long-tail traffic for that variation.

Hmmm, I’m not a fan of either name, but can’t suggest an alternative without a better idea of the content.

If everything in your book is slanted toward “don’t do this, don’t do that,” then a negatively-slanted title would be appropriate. In that case, probably the “how to not kill your blog” idea is best of the two suggestions.

However, if some of your tips are “do this, do that” types of tips, then the book isn’t all slanted in one direction, and the “don’t kill it” kind of subtitle won’t work consistently. In that sort of case, a subtitle along the lines of “how to keep your blog alive” might be better.

You could even mix them up, and say something such as, “101 ways to not kill you blog and keep it alive and well” or some other description like that.

Good luck on your book! I think you’ve got a good test run going and I look forward to your SEO results in a couple months!

Thanks for the great feedback, Sandee. Yours wasn’t the only negative feedback I got regarding the title, so I’m glad I asked about it! I ended up calling it “101 Blogging Tips: How to Create a Blog That People Will Find, Read, and Share.”

Better? It’s now live and available for sale at Amazon.com :D You can read more about it in my latest blog post here: http://blog.osmosio.com/101-blogging-tips-kindle-ebook-amazon/
