I ran across a great blog post the other day about why Dropbox was recently valued at a staggering $5 billion and how it got to that stage. It was an interesting post, but it was what I saw in the sidebar that really intrigued me…

Here’s the blog post, and here’s a screenshot of the blog’s sidebar (with many arrows added by me for good measure):

Pretty neat, eh?

So what we’re seeing there is a widget in the blog’s sidebar that’s offering minute-by-minute consulting. $10 a minute is definitely more than I’d charge ($600 an hour!), but then again, I’m not a well-known angel investor in Silicon Valley…

But see how cool this is? It’s great for the blogger because hey, it’s money! And it’s great for the person paying for the consulting because he/she won’t have to pay some exorbitant hourly rate for only 10 or 20 minutes of a person’s time.

Both people win because it provides value to both parties. It’s accessible consulting, and I think it’s a fantastic idea.

The little widget on Chris’s blog is powered by Vinswer. Unfortunately the service is still in closed alpha testing and not available to the public (though you can sign up to be notified when they go live). But this is definitely something I’ll keep an eye on and keep everyone posted about.

Seeing things like this just make me happy. It’s good to know there are smart people doing cool things still :D Oh and by the way, I freaking love Dropbox, though I don’t know if I’d pay $5 billion for it…

  • Ever heard of this service before or seen anything like it?
  • Would you sign up for the service and put the widget on your blog? If so, how much would you charge?
  • How much would you be willing to pay (per minute) to access an expert?
