If you want more pageviews on your blog without really having to do anything, have I got something pretty darn cool to show you!

Yesterday I was wasting time online (as I am wont to do, despite my best efforts) and happened to find myself reading this blog post. I say that I was reading the post, but I actually I didn’t even get through the second paragraph. Something in the sidebar caught my eye and nearly made me pee my pants from excitement. This is what I saw:

StumbleThru

I saw it, clicked on it, and was taken to a random page of the blog that had been previously Stumbled by someone. But there’s more to it than just being taken to a random page. At the top of my screen was a little browser StumbleUpon toolbar that let me like or dislike the random page that I was on. It looked like this:

StumbleUpon bar

Now the way StumbleUpon works is that if you like something (give it a thumb up, that is), that page gets recommended to other people with similar interests. Ergo, the more people randomly go through your pages and thumb up them, the more traffic you’re going to get (because the pages will be recommended to others, remember). Make sense?

Getting people to go through and like random pages on your blog is a good thing because it means more page views and just more exposure to you and what your blog is all about. It drags them deeper into the quicksand that is your blog. Excellent.

So I set about trying to figure out how to get something like that on my blog. It took a bit of searching and tinkering, but it wasn’t too hard to figure out. The thing is called StumbleThru, and you can find the main StumbleThru page here.

To implement something like this for your blog, first you’ll need an image or something that people can click on. You could use a link, but I think a little graphic or button stands out a lot more. Check the sidebar of Blogging Bookshelf for the button I made. I also made a similar one that anyone can use on their blog. Here it is:

StumbleThru button

Like I said, feel free to download it and use it on your blog, and feel free to throw some good karma my way however you feel appropriate :)

So the image is the first thing you need, now you need a URL to link the image to. This is it:

http://www.stumbleupon.com/to/stumble/stumblethru:thebacklight.com

Though of course replace thebacklight.com with your blog’s address (no http:// or www.). Or you don’t have to change it. That’s cool, too.

Note that for all of this to work, you have to have your blog’s pages/posts/whatever submitted in the StumbleUpon system. When someone clicks the “Stumble through” button, StumbleUpon isn’t going through all of your blogs pages and choosing one; it’s going through all of your blog’s pages that have already been Stumbled and choosing one that is appropriate for the stumbler.

Anyway, I thought this was pretty freaking sweet, and I’m excited to see how it works. I’ll announce at some point in the future whether this really has increased my pageviews or new StumbleUpon traffic, and I’ll likely do it on Twitter or Google+, so make sure you’re following me. Until then, feel free to Stumble through Blogging Bookshelf and give a thumb up to things you like.

Oh, and of course the moral of the story is that wasted time online is not necessarily time wasted :)

  • Have you signed up for StumbleUpon? If not, why not?
  • Do you submit your own blog posts to StumbleUpon?
  • How often do you use StumbleUpon for browsing and looking for cool stuff?
  • Are you going to implement this StumbleThru thing on your blog?
